Unfortunately, violence is a reality for too many children in Croatia and leaves lasting consequences on their lives. Physical or psychological abuse – especially when it occurs within the family – hinders a child’s development, damages self-esteem and makes learning difficult. Children who experience violence feel sad, scared and think they are not worth enough. 

But no child should grow up in fear. Every child has the right to a safe childhood filled with love and support.

With your donation, you support the implementation of targeted activities that help parents and children in the most vulnerable situations. UNICEF, with your help, funds programs that change the lives of families across Croatia:

• Workshops for parents - we organize free workshops for parents living in demanding circumstances. Through professional support, parents gain knowledge and skills in positive parenting in order to build a stable, warm and affectionate relationship with their children, instead of raising them with fear and punishment. This prevents domestic violence in the long term and ensures a safe environment for the child.

• Education of professionals – we invest in the education of social workers, psychologists, teachers and other professionals who work with children and families. Specialized training improves their competences in recognizing risky situations and effectively responding to violence against children. Educated professionals can provide timely support to families and protect children from further abuse.

• Didactic materials – we provide didactic materials and manuals for children and parents that promote non-violent communication, play and learning. Through picture books, games and educational guides, we teach parents alternative parenting methods and help children express their feelings and cope with trauma more easily. These materials build trust between children and adults and encourage growing up without violence.
